About the Journal

Focus and Scope

The International Journal of Communication is an online, multi-media, academic journal that adheres to the highest standards of peer review and engages established and emerging scholars from anywhere in the world. The International Journal of Communication is an interdisciplinary journal that, while centered in communication, is open and welcoming to contributions from the many disciplines and approaches that meet at the crossroads that is communication study. We are interested in scholarship that crosses disciplinary lines and speaks to readers from a range of theoretical and methodological perspectives. In other words, the International Journal of Communication will be a forum for scholars when they address the wider audiences of our many sub-fields and specialties, rather than the location for the narrower conversations more appropriately conducted within more specialized journals.

According to the latest statistics from Google Scholar, IJoC ranks 6th among all Humanities, Literature & Arts journals, and 9th among Communication journals.

Author Fees

IJoC does not charge fees for new submissions or registration. However, at the acceptance stage, authors might be charged a copyediting overage fee, if they choose to exceed the max word count of 9,000 words (for accepted articles only). The journal is only budgeted for 9,000 words per article and so must charge $30 for every 250 words over 9,000. Please note that international wire fees might also apply (international authors might also incur a $50.00 bank fee for wires) in determining the overall copyediting overage charge. Authors are invoiced at the proofing stage, once final word counts are determined. Additionally, authors who choose to review more than three proofs are charged $60 for each additional proof, and line changes are $10/line. This is due to strict budget limitations, and authors are strongly encouraged to just follow the word count guidelines and approve their second or third proof throughout the editorial process, to prevent them from incurring fees. Additionally, Special Sections, including Forums, are not budgeted and must be funded in full by guest editors. See the Special Section guidelines for more information. We are unable to offer fee waivers at this time, due to strict budget limitations.

About this Publishing System

This journal uses Open Journal Systems 3, which is open source journal management and publishing software developed, supported, and freely distributed by the Public Knowledge Project under the GNU General Public License.

Publishing Schedule

IJoC is online only and publishes one volume per year. Articles post to the current volume bi-monthly, by the 15th and 30th of each month, except for during February, due to the shorter month, and during December. We stop publishing on November 30 of each year and do not publish in December.

Authorship and Contributorship

IJoC considers authors to be those individuals who conducted the research and/or analysis for and wrote /prepared the article for submission. Contributors might be those who were consulted or lent initial ideas, but did not participate in the research or writing process. Authorship changes both before and after publication should be communicated to Managing Editor Kady Bell-Garcia, or to Managing Editor Chi Zhang (Special Sections only). If during peer review, we will need to determine if the double-blind review process has been compromised. If after publication, the editorial team will review the rationale for such changes. Please also note that AI tools or LLMs can not be listed as authors or contributors.

Only authors who submit through the system will be able to access the submission. Contributing authors agree to correspond on behalf of all authors and respond to any editorial inquiries in a timely manner.
